Every spring, the Township office receives many calls asking for clarification of the burning ordinance. Here is a summary of the main points of question. Free Burning Permits can be obtained by emailing: j.kotchman@nftwp.com

Summary of the Burning Ordinance

Recreational Burning

  • Limited to the hours of 9:00 am to 12:00 am.

  • Not permitted between the hours of 12:00 am and 9:00 am.

  • Patio firepits and other outdoor burners do not require a permit and are limited to the above hours.

  • Open fires (bonfires) require a permit and are limited to the above hours.

Container Fires

  • Burning limited to paper products.

  • Containers cannot be larger than a 55 gallon drum

  • Allowed on Tuesdays and Saturdays from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm without a permit. All other days require a permit.

  • Burning of rubbish, trade waste, and garbage is not permitted.                                         Examples of non-permitted items: animal or vegetable matter, food, animal waste, grass,   leaves, rags, furniture, carpets, paint, oil, plastic, etc.

Brush Burning

  • Brush burning requires a permit.

  • Limited to the hours of 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.

  • Tuesday and Saturday are recommended days.

Vegetation Burn-off

  • Burning off vegetation on land for maintenance or in preparation for construction requires a permit.

  • Limited to Tuesdays and Saturdays from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Rules for All Fires

  • Must be centered, as much as possible, between the side yard lines of the property and must be a minimum of 10 feet from the rear yard lot line.

  • All fires must be set and maintained to not create a hazard to persons or property.  Fires set by permit must be attended at all times.
